Welcome to the Cobra Project
home page where I will document my progress at building and driving
a Lone Star 427SC Cobra replica. This site is one of a series
of web sites that document my various aviation and automotive
projects, both past and present. If you linked here directly
and would like to view my other projects, please click HERE.
From this page you can navigate
to any aspect of the Cobra construction effort that you'd like to
see. Below, in the
construction log you'll find all of my assembly pictures and
narrative for every phase of my project. You can start at the
beginning and page sequentially through every page or you can click
on just a specific item of interest.
I hope you find the content here
entertaining, perhaps even valuable. It should be an
interesting journey since I am not much of a gear head or car
buff. I am fairly mechanically inclined and pretty good with
my hands. In the past 20 years, I have built and flown three
airplanes from kits, and I even managed to get my last airplane,
pictured below, on the cover of a magazine and featured in some
advertising.
Since childhood, I have
always dreamed of owning a Cobra. Since the originals
typically sell at auction from $500,000 to over $ 1 Million, the
only alternative for me is to build my own. There are many,
many other people just like me who fulfilled their dream by building
a kit version of Carroll Shelby's creation so it is not as far
fetched as it may sound. So if you're anything like me and
have always wanted a Cobra but weren't sure you had the skill to put
one together, then this site is for you. We'll learn
together. Along the way, I plan to document the key decision
points, build sequence, parts lists, etc. That way future
builders of the Lone Star kit can at least benefit from my research
and lessons learned. Nearly all the information that I've
gathered has come from other builders of this kit who have
generously shared their experiences via the Lone Star Builders
Forum. They are a great bunch of fellow enthusiasts and I am
deeply indebted to them for their help. Thanks
guys.
Finally a word about
copyrights. All the material on my site is copyrighted.
If you want to use it for your own use, go ahead. If you plan
to stick it somewhere on the Internet for others to use, or you plan
to distribute the material in any way, I would appreciate it if you
would ask for my permission before doing so. I will usually
grant my permission provided I am credited as the author.
I completed the car in
January 2012. I recently upgraded a number of items this past
winter based upon my first year of driving. I've updated the
construction log with those items under "Winter Upgrades".
